6 Caribbean Getaways to Get You Through the Winter
Looking out the window and seeing that snow fall is probably making you wish for a nice Caribbean getaway right about now, so why not take one? Here are some of the best winter destinations in one of the warmest places on Earth.
Bonaire
This beautiful hamlet nestled in the Caribbean Sea is one of the most affordable islands you’ll come across, at least by Caribbean standards. It’s part of the ABC islands—the others being Aruba and Curacao—which aren’t so affordable. Bonaire is one of the most popular destinations for scuba diving thanks to having one of the largest fish populations in the Islands. Take a hike up to the tallest peak in Bonaire, Bradaris, and then enjoy your afternoon taking in the views on Lac Bay or swimming with Nemo.
Puerto Rico
Who says you have to leave the U.S. to have a good time? Puerto Rico is a salsa dancer’s delight and home to—we think—some of the best food the Caribbean has to offer. Round-trip tickets for the winter month come in under $400 if you buy them a few weeks ahead, so that’ll leave you with plenty of money to explore the sites. The national rainforest, El Yunque, is home to some of the nations best waterfalls. Stay in San Juan for the abundant activities, and the rest of the island is small enough that you can get around easily from there.
Turks and Ciacos Islands
These islands have a little something for everyone whether you’re looking for luxury or a little adventure. Plus, they’re extremely affordable during January and February. Right now you can find deals between $300 and $500 on plane tickets, depending on which week you choose.
Book a room in Grand Turk, which tends to be more affordable then some of the other island areas, and spend your time relaxing on the whitest beaches of the Caribbean. Avoid the Providenciales if you’re looking to save money – it’s kind of a luxurious tourist trap anyway – and spend time island hopping among the great mom and pop shops along the shores.
St. Barthélemy
It’s all about the beaches in St. Bart’s—and the free-roaming iguanas. Seriously, there are tons of both. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach getaway far removed from bars and busy streets at night then St. Bart’s is just what you need. The beaches here are all free and, though it can get a little expensive, there are good deals for under $1000 on plane tickets for the winter months. Make sure to pack your food, as restaurants are scarce in comparison to most Caribbean islands and picnicking on the beach is a big thing here.
Grenada
Grenada is another great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life thanks in part to it being heavily influenced by European style and flair. It’s popular among the French and the Brits, and once you get a load of the sights you’ll understand why.
The shorelines along Grenada look like a bag of Starburst exploded with bright flashes of color sprinkled everywhere. Those colors reflect along the waters, making Grenada one of the prettiest places in the Caribbean. It’s a network of 40 islands, but you’ll want to stay on Grand Anse to get the best deals. It’s centrally located, making it easy for you to explore on a budget.
Dominica
As much as we’re all missing warm beaches this winter, we’re sure some of you would like to get a little leafy green into your travels, too. That’s why Dominica might be a great choice. It’s extremely affordable—thanks to oft being overlooked—and is home to one of the most lush forest environments in the Islands.
The island has a strong focus on conservation and fights tooth and nail against commercialization most of the time, so you won’t find many chains here. It’s perfect for ecotourists and anyone looking for a little wild adventure. The going rate is under $700 for a round-trip tickets in the winter. Get ‘em while they’re hot!
