Surfin U.S.A. by The Beach Boys
The lyrics are by Brian Wilson but the music is Chuck Berry’s Sweet Little Sixteen. While this song is the epitome of beach songs and one of the more iconic Beach Boys tunes, there was a lot of controversy over using Chuck’s music. Brian was originally listed as the sole composer upon its release in 1963 but the publishing was eventually turned over to Arc Music, Chuck Berry’s publisher. Surfin U.S.A. was featured on the group’s album of the same name and was named as the number two song of 1963 by Billboard magazine. It is also on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that shaped Rock and Roll list.
